How we grow up
04:08
|
|||
I heard a song when I was still asleep
It felt like finding my old house keys
And it reminded me of On The Road
When he wakes in a hotel in Iowa and tries to remember
A dream seen from above
Old rooms, old rituals
Headlights are moving on
Taking pictures of what’s gone
Cold night, people waiting at a station
A cast of once-familiar faces
You’ll wake, sometimes
At dawn and won’t remember
And that’s how we grow up
We don’t remember
That’s how we grow up
We don’t remember
She said you know we leave things behind
Like hard rubbish and Stasi files
You know I did not recognise
That handwriting was my own
You’ll wake and put away your childhood things
Or at least you rearrange them
You’ll miss a place
That you don’t remember
And that’s how we grow up
We don’t remember
That’s how we grow up
We don’t remember
I heard a song when I was still asleep
It felt like finding my old house keys
And it reminded me of On The Road
When he wakes in a hotel room in Iowa City
He stops and looks up at the cracked high ceilings
He hears human voices, they’re down in the hallway
There’s a train in the distance
And for fifteen seconds he tries to remember himself
And that’s how we grow up
We don’t remember
That’s how we grow up
We don’t remember

Invisible tower
04:10
|
|||
There must be an invisible tower
Where the optimists go
Where they dream dreams not wrapped in disclaimers
Where they’re not ashamed to hope
Here are a couple of strangers
I suppose they’re in love
I suppose they feel things they’re supposed to
But I wouldn’t know about those
See them on valentine’s evening
They don’t run, they go slow
For they know the way to the tower
While we hopelessly hope below
For they know the way to the tower
While we hopelessly hope below
There must be an invisible tower
Where the optimists go
Where they dream dreams not wrapped in disclaimers
But it’s not a place I know

Prometheus
05:05
|
|||
So it’s been one year of this
The living with the consequence
Of fire like Prometheus
It’s true, much of it true
That love affair was scandalous
But I think that they appreciated us
The details of us
They were treasuring the photographs
Of fire like Prometheus
So I’m told Prometheus
Took the fire from the gods
And gave it to the rest of us
Then as his punishment
They tied him to an open rock
Where a bird would come to chew his guts
Each day, it came back every day
It seemed to like the consequence
Of fire for Prometheus
So it’s been one year since the news
Came out about the hotel room
We were both advised to just shoot through
Now you, what about you?
I’m still living in a hot dog town
It’s the perfect place to get ground down
Into rumour mill food
People say they’re scrupulous
But they seem to like the guts of us
There will be more years of this
The living with the consequence
Of fire like Prometheus
But I know that one day
I’ll be sitting by an open fire
No regrets will live to my old age
It’s true, we pay what is due
But just like for Prometheus
That bird one day gets tired of us

No rest in that riverbed
04:02
|
|||
Nobody needs to know
But they usually do
A silhouette outside
Waits for you
Go to the new ghost town
To the corner shop
A bingo hall
The lights flick on and off
Dressed in a pale pink shirt
Yes, it’s cold outside
But you can’t go back
You follow that line
Down into the …
River bed, love’s restless river bed
River bed that restless river bed
Water has a perfect memory
There’ll be no rest in that river bed
After the greasy spoon
Sit apart you two
This just can’t go on
But you always do
Hear them call your name
See them catch your eye
Feel the trouble that comes
For you on the tide
Like the shutters in the street
Like the litter that blows
A cigarette inside
Watch them move but not go
And you wake up in the…
River bed, love’s restless river bed
River bed that restless river bed
Water has a perfect memory
There’ll be no rest in that river bed
There’ll be no rest in that river bed

Always know there’s an undertow
It makes the boat go slow
As we sail to the horizon
But we’ll say we sailed in a straight line
We won’t mention that part
We’ll say we sailed in a straight line
We won’t mention…
In a place in the old town there are bones below
The pine trees grow there now
And the ground can seem uneven
But we say it goes in a straight line
We don’t mention that part
We say it goes in a straight line
We don’t mention…
Our belts held high, staying in straight lines
That’s how we won the war
They won’t want more information
Adults are not children, they don’t want to know
We’ll just say we stayed in a straight line
We won’t mention that part
We’ll just say we stayed in a straight line
We won’t mention
Always know there’s an undertow
It makes the boat go slow
As we sail to the horizon
But we’ll say we sailed in a straight line
We won’t mention that part
We’ll say we sailed in a straight line
We won’t mention…
And all of those stories that don’t quite make sense
Like, where did that girl go?
And why is that boy now so angry?
And then something in a settlement
So much madness, so much coincidence
And then say they strayed from the straight line
Don’t mention why
Just say they strayed from the straight line
Don’t mention…
“And in the darkness, I trusted you”
I heard the blind man sing
Busking underneath the station
In a tunnel since filled in
It’s easier to keep up disappearances
When compared to what you seek
The universe and stars are easy
At least they have an end
We’ll just say we sailed in a straight line
We won’t mention that part
We’ll just say we sailed in a straight line
We won’t mention…
We’ll just say we sailed in a straight line
We’ll just say we sailed in a straight line
We’ll just say we sailed in a straight line
We sailed in a straight line
We sailed in a straight line
To here
