about

How low can you go? In my case, and many others, very low indeed. But why does the rest of the world seem to be so optimistic, and to dream without disclaimers? Most likely this is an illusion, but it's a powerful one. This song seemed sprang into being on a dark day, like it had always been there, the sound after everything else is switched off. The structure is based on another tune suited to dark times, St James Infirmary, but also brings to mind that song from Eraserhead!

lyrics

There must be an invisible tower
Where the optimists go
Where they dream dreams not wrapped in disclaimers
Where they’re not ashamed to hope

Here are a couple of strangers
I suppose they’re in love
I suppose they feel things they’re supposed to
But I wouldn’t know about those

See them on valentine’s evening
They don’t run, they go slow
For they know the way to the tower
While we hopelessly hope below

For they know the way to the tower
While we hopelessly hope below

There must be an invisible tower
Where the optimists go
Where they dream dreams not wrapped in disclaimers
But it’s not a place I know
