This song is based on an interesting and vividly written chapter in Viv Albertine's memoir, "Clothes Clothes Clothes, Music Music Music, Boys Boys Boys". She describes a tour with punk bands that stops in Newcastle (UK) in the late 1970s. She and her love interest leave the bubble of the punk gig and go out into the night, surprised at how much of a ghost town the economic conditions have made Newcastle, far from the trendy happenings of London. They are having an affair, and after an evening out in the dark of the dilapidated town, drawn down to the boats, they encounter lots of social tension on return. The imagery of the northern industrial ghost town and the social tensions of restless love lives brings to mind "kitchen sink" dramas like "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning".
