In ancient Greek mythology, Prometheus was a giant who defied the gods to give fire to his favourite clay people: humans, who, before this, had lived in the dark. His punishment was to be tied to a rock, where a bird would eat his liver each day, then grow back again, to be eaten again the next day. Presumably the bird got tired of this eventually. But, overall, it gives the impression that the punishment was a bit too gleeful, especially given how much the fire did light up so many lives.
In modern times, people with scandalous private lives are the source of fascination and, often times, punishment. But their activities light up many lives. Presumably we wouldn't be so fascinated with them if there weren't some kind of fire-like allure there. In particular, this song was written thinking about Elizabeth Taylor (the other one!!!! not the one in Taylor Project) and her affair with Richard Burton, one of the first highly publicised scandals for celebrities. Viewers were outraged but...treasuring the photographs, like fire from Prometheus.
lyrics
So it’s been one year of this
The living with the consequence
Of fire like Prometheus
It’s true, much of it true
That love affair was scandalous
But I think that they appreciated us
The details of us
They were treasuring the photographs
Of fire like Prometheus
So I’m told Prometheus
Took the fire from the gods
And gave it to the rest of us
Then as his punishment
They tied him to an open rock
Where a bird would come to chew his guts
Each day, it came back every day
It seemed to like the consequence
Of fire for Prometheus
So it’s been one year since the news
Came out about the hotel room
We were both advised to just shoot through
Now you, what about you?
I’m still living in a hot dog town
It’s the perfect place to get ground down
Into rumour mill food
People say they’re scrupulous
But they seem to like the guts of us
There will be more years of this
The living with the consequence
Of fire like Prometheus
But I know that one day
I’ll be sitting by an open fire
No regrets will live to my old age
It’s true, we pay what is due
But just like for Prometheus
That bird one day gets tired of us
